Hear no Evil Oni is named Mika, named after of Mikazaru/ Kikazaru from the Japanese monkey’s name. The sound of “mimi” means ears in Japanese, and in Chinese it means “secrets.”
The history of Speak, See, Hear no evil monkeys comes from Japan. The origin of saying comes from India Hinduism, to Buddhism, to Chinese Tao/Daoism.
“非禮勿聽” a Chinese proverb by Confucius meaning “Listen not at what is contrary to propriety.” In modern terms, “Do not listen to what is immoral or ill mannered.” Simply put, some people may hear what they want, but not listen to what is actually being said. All of the monkeys tells of self-reflection of one’s own actions, and what one deems as evil or good.
Why Oni? From the word “鬼” or “gui” Oni means Ghost/demon. One, to match the Oni masks, and two, making this silly pun of “Oni U;” because only you can determine what is good or bad in your life. Sometimes it can be the latter. Did you notice their hands? They are also signing their respective actions. The color of the jackets shows the duality of life. Where there is good, there is evil, and where there is evil there is also good- the yin and yang, the black and white.
