Design Concepts:

Speak no Evil Oni is named “Iwa.” It’s name is from the Japanese and Speak no evil monkey’s name, Iwazaru. Meaning words or speak.

Iwa is signing one, but putting her hand on her mouth to “hush” and negate speech.

The history of Speak, See, Hear no evil monkeys comes from Japan. The origin of saying comes from India, Hinduism to Buddhism, and finally to to Chinese Tao/Daoism.

“非禮勿言” a Chinese proverb by Confucius meaning “Speak not at what is contrary to propriety.” In modern terms, “Do not speak in ill manners.” Similar to “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” All of the monkeys tells of self-reflection of one’s own actions, and what one deems as evil or good.

Why Oni? From the word “鬼” or “gui” Oni means Ghost/demon. One, to match the Oni masks, and two, making this silly pun of “Oni U;” because only you can determine what is good or bad in your life. Sometimes it can be the latter. Did you notice their hands? They are also signing their respective actions. The color of the jackets shows the duality of life. Where there is good, there is evil, and where there is evil there is also good- the yin and yang, the black and white.
